Teaching

Education at the VUB revolves around a student-focused approach, and around promoting a critical, inquisitive and non-dogmatic mindset. But how do you coach students in acquiring these and other skills? How do you evaluate whether students have sufficiently developed the desired competences?

Developing, implementing and supporting education is no easy subject matter. That’s why the VUB offers a wide range of support to help you to optimally fulfill these responsibilities:

“The group aspect and especially the interdisciplinary aspect proved very helpful. I actually learned the most from people who work in a completely different field from my own.”

Trajectory for educational development

The VUB trajectory for educational development is our basic training for lecturers. (only in Dutch) It guides lecturers in further developing their teaching skills.

The programme starts each year in January with a four-day residential session at the seaside and ends in September with a presentation of a practical assignment to a jury. Participants will be coached on their assignment through group meetings and targeted feedback.

The total time investment is 90 hours.

“The combination of receiving information and sharing experiences as a group was very enriching.” Participant in the session on Basic Principles for good study materials

Short training & info sessions

These sessions are available for all teaching staff. The length of the sessions varies from one hour to a half day.

Each session covers a specific educational theme, ranging from teaching to educational tools and policy-related topics.

A suitable approach will be chosen depending on the goals. This could be an information session or a workshop, as well as a follow-up session to further monitor progress and to share experiences. There are also lunch sessions in which colleagues share good practices and inspiration.

The sessions can also be tailored to the needs of a course council.

Offer specifically for chairs of course councils

We also offer support for chairs of course councils in their wide array of duties. We organise sessions that pay specific attention to their responsibilities.

Our range covers: relevant regulations, specific policy topics and the resources offered through Education and Student Affairs.

Online support

Besides the face-to-face training courses we offer online support on several educational topics.

Perhaps useful for your teaching assistants?

For doctoral candidates and postdocs with various teaching duties, there is a one-day training course focused on the tasks of teaching assistants (new - also in English!). Questions covered include “How do I prepare a lesson?”, “What are areas for particular attention during the class itself?”, “How do I coach students?”.

The VUB prides itself on freedom of inquiry and giving freedom to our researchers. But that doesn't mean you'll be on your own! Whether you want to boost your competences, become more autonomous, or stay on top of developments in a constantly changing research culture… we offer lots of support.

VALORIZATION OF RESEARCH

The VUB supports research that is engaged with, and in service of, society. In your role as an expert in your professional field, it is very important for you to be able to effectively communicate about your research to a broad audience. Your research can also contribute to a critical social debate, or the pursuit of innovation and economic added value.

Science outreach

We offer a variety of specific initiatives and support for bridging the gap between researcher and society:

  • Are you interested in writing a popular scientific article? Then our science blog “wtnschp.be” is certainly for you. You can count on support from our editorial team;
  • Would you prefer direct contact with the general public or would you rather inspire the next generation of researchers? Then you'll surely find what you are looking for amongst the various platforms available, with initiatives such as the PhD Cup, Science Festival, Bright Club Brussels or the VUB Children's University. As part of some of our initiatives, we provide workshops or direct support;
  • The Science Outreach office is also happy to provide advice on your own outreach initiative. You can contact us here;

In addition (and independent of specific initiatives), you can get inspiration to communicate with impact via diverse media channels, such as communication through press and social media. These courses are non-research specific, taught in Dutch, aimed towards all VUB staff and will be scheduled by our VUB-expertise centre MarCom. Requests for English sessions will be considered if there is a sufficient demand. E-mail us.

Economic valorization of research

Do you dream of starting your own spin-off?

During the first semester, you can take two interactive introductory courses on entrepreneurship with a focus on innovation and technology:

  • The Starter Seminars are primarily focused towards VUB Master and PhD students, as well as towards senior researchers who are interested in the link between research and entrepreneurship;
  • The Advanced Starter Seminars are for those who have basic background in business management, or who have (concrete) plans for launching their own start-up.

These intensive courses consist of a series of evening seminars covering various basic principles of entrepreneurship, such as drawing up a business plan, marketing and innovative forms of financing. In addition, the seminars will invite high-level professionals to share their knowledge and expertise and you will have the opportunity to have your own project evaluated by them.

    Governance and policy

    In your career as a member of the professorial staff, you will not only grow increasingly independent in your scientific research, but you will also increasingly participate in, and exert influence on, internal and external committees and policy-making bodies.

    But what are your rights and obligations? What are the latest developments and current priorities within the VUB policy? How do you take difficult decisions? Where can you find information about the budgets?

    For new managers and heads of research groups (new in our range) in the VUB advisory bodies, a brief, intensive programme is scheduled every other year (however, there is separate support available for course councils). Depending on the needs, this programme may be geared towards specific target groups. These target groups will be provided with all information in due course. If you have any questions, mail to [email protected]

    Most of these courses are taught in Dutch. Requests for courses in English will be considered if the demand is high. Please contact [email protected]

    Take control of your own career

    When you can purposefully develop a career and are  more aware of your personal potential, you will be more motivated and better equipped to combat burn-out. We therefore want to stimulate you to actively cultivate your well-being and career. We organise a number of types of training in this area.

    Explore the events

    Just like our society, our work context is constantly in motion. How can we stay strong and resilient in the face of all this change? The training ‘Staying resilient in rapidly changing circumstances’ helps you identify the warning signs of stress and learn how to talk about this with your supervisor and colleagues.

    Would you like to do some thinking about your career? The two-day training ‘In the driver’s seat of your own career’ will help you to identify your talents and learn what acts as a source of energy for you, and what doesn't. You will then be encouraged to more clearly formulate your career expectations and dreams, and to consider what it would take to make them a reality.

    As a member of the professorial staff, you will have considerable autonomy and responsibility. This will involve many all-round skills. Would you like to further develop your leadership and management capacities? Brush up on your ICT skills? Then you’ve come to the right place!

    Leadership

    In order to provide leaders with optimal support for their responsibilities, we offer a series of general modules that are open for anyone in a management role, in all staff categories:

    • The core leadership training with (optional) intervision sessions, in which the knowledge acquired about situational leadership, giving feedback and conducting difficult conversations is applied to personal cases;
    • The training building a resilient team, which focuses on promptly recognising stress in yourself and your employees, and offers tips and tricks to increase the resilience of your team;
    • The basic training on prevention and well-being, in which you receive more info about your responsibilities concerning the health and safety of employees;
    • Domain-specific training on, for example, financial and personnel administration.

    Project management

    Sometimes, for specific target groups, a two-day basic course on 'Project management' can be organised, which will cover the theory and methods, followed by an optional half-day 'Projectboost follow-up session' at which this knowledge is specifically applied to your project(s).
