Several entrepreneurs from VUB spin-offs will share their expertise in starting up a business with you:

  • For their PhD thesis Matthias D’Huyvetter and Jens de Vos, both performed research on camelid nanobodies but from a different angle. This resulted in a VIB-VUB spin-off in 2014. As Chief Scientific Officer Matthias is responsible for the scientific research at Camel-IDS. Jens started focusing more on the business aspects and became Chief Operating Officer at Camel-IDS. They both participated at the VUB Starter Seminars a few years ago. Camel-IDS develops radio-immunotherapeutic drugs for cancer patients. Their proprietary technology platform is based on the unique characteristics of the Camelid immune system and allows fast and specific delivery of therapeutic radiation to cancer cells, while sparing healthy tissues.
  • From the establishment of VUB spin-off Optrima, the merge a few years later with SoftKinetic until the buy-out in 2017 by Sony, the story of this company reads as the perfect success trajectory of a start-up. However, co-founder Ward Van der Tempel will testify that a lot of passion, hard work and a bit of luck were indispensable. Ward Van der Tempel is now Head of Technology at Sony Depthsensing Solutions. In 2009 he co-founded Optrima as a spin-off company of the Laboratory for Micro- & Photonelectronics of the department Electronics and Informatics of the VUB, based on years of research on 3D time-of-flight CMOS sensors and cameras by a team of physicists, analog and digital designers, and image processing specialists. As a PhD-student in engineering he participated at the starter seminars to obtain some basic background in business management and entrepreneurship.
