Ethics: Human & Social Sciences

donderdag, 6 december, 2018 - 12:00
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering campus
D
D1.08
R&D - Legal & Ethics Office
Lunch session

Doing ethical research in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) requires creativity. For one thing, there are fewer legal frameworks to follow (unlike medical research or animal experiments). For another, SSH researchers often work with humans, often in complex and sensitive situations. Concepts from other domains (such as informed consent) do not always apply easily in SSH research, and it is not always easy to predict how the research will affect the participants. During this session, four young VUB researchers will present their research and the ethical questions it raises. The session will be interesting for other young researchers, and also for supervisors who need to help their research students.

Presentations:

??? Eugenio Mantovani (Faculty of Law): Ethical and legal management of research involving children and the processing of children’s personal data.

??? Michiel De Proost (Gender, Diversity and Intersectionaity): Beyond Gender Differences in Ethical-Empirical Research.

??? Ellen Vermeulen (Film-maker): Ethical boundaries when making documentaries with people in sensitive situations.

??? Sanne Sinnige (History, Archaeology, Art, Philosophy and Ethics): Research into contemporary film about the colonial past: collecting data in a decolonial manner
